Solspejlet's story in short form...

In the beginning, 30 or more years ago, the shop which was later to become Solspejlet was called "Antroposofisk Bogstue" (translated it means Anthroposophical Book Room). And it was actually a room in a private apartment in the old part of Copenhagen. Later the private room was substituted for a real basement corner shop on Nikolaj Square, and there, in addition to books, the shop now sold Weleda's products and Stockmar colours and beeswax candles. There were also a few toys. In 1993 the shop changed hands and moved to Skindergade, and 2 years later received its new name "Solspejlet" (which means "Mirror of the Sun"). In the spring of 1998, when the shop was about to burst at the seams, it was moved to larger premises at its present address, and has since then been owned and managed by me, Elspeth Barrie Larsen.

Solspejlet today

My vision with Solspejlet is, that it should be the place in Copenhagen where anyone, with or without any previous knowledge, can see and experience things which are produced on the basis of the views on human life and of the world, which Rudolf Steiner called anthroposophy. Steiner's philosophy never stops at dry theory, but gives inspiration to many practical and exciting enterprises – among the results of which are the books and products in the shop. We think that these things should be able to speak for themselves, and it is therefore important to us that visitors can browse undisturbed. We are always willing to talk about the ideas and promote the goods, but only when we are asked!
Over time our customer-group has gradually changed and consequently the shop's product range has changed too, with considerable enlargement of the toy department and the development of the online shop (Netshop) as the most visible results. Our customer group has "become" younger, and consists largely of people, who have become more aware especially in questions of health and environment in the broad sense, and particularly when it comes to children's well-being. They expect the highest standards of quality and safety, demands which we constantly strive to live up to.

The shop
The building is from 1878 with the typical high ceilings of the time. Inside the walls are glazed in colours that reflect the character of the merchandise.
Our seasonal window at pavement level shows the course of the year with handmade figures and dolls inspired by the various books on our shelves. The figures er are not for sale!
The book department The skin-care department hidden slightly by the beeswax candle rack
